Discrimination and Diversity: The Challenges and Rewards of the Workplace David Kiedis Palm Beach State College Abstract This paper will be one that explores some of the challenges that have made up the workplace. Namely the fact that discrimination of people who are considered different than others in the workplace has been commonplace since the dawn of our great nation. By contrasting discrimination with how diversity can be extremely rewarding for businesses and the employees, it will be possible to see the numerous benefits that have come as a result of diversity in the workplace. By reviewing 10 peer-reviewed articles it will be evident that not all groups (based on gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, age, handicaps, religion, different socioeconomic levels) have been treated equal over time and some are still fighting for basic rights within the workplace. By better understanding the differences that people have with each other, it will be easier to be more inclusive with a more diverse workplace and see the benefits and rewards that come along with it. The Italian Renaissance is known for its birth of many notable philosophers, including the famous Niccolo Machiavelli. He is, without a doubt, one of the greatest political thinkers to have ever existed, and his ideas and beliefs have been an inspiration and motivation for many famous leaders. Although he has known to have been a positive influence on mankind, Machiavelli has also distinguished a bad reputation that has been unfairly given to him because of a misunderstanding in his views on politics. Since rulers like Hitler and Mussolini have followed his teachings for obtaining power, society has unfortunately looked down upon this great philosopher, despite the many things he introduced to mankind. When you are talking to someone or someone is talking to you. You can tell a lot about how well the person is listening and understands what you are saying. If they are looking at you but have a puzzled look on their face that shows they are listening but also shows they are confused about what you are talking about or what you are saying is completely wrong or off the topic you started talking about. Body language also tells a lot about the listener and the speaker. If you are talking to someone and they are playing with their hands, folding their arms or doing anything else but paying full attention to the speaker. That shows they are just waiting for you to be done talking so that they can go back and do what they would rather be doing. If the speaker is looking around the room or maybe playing with the note cards or whatever the case may be. That shows that maybe they aren’t very comfortable with what they are talking about or they are not very good at public speaking. Other things that are unwritten and nonverbal are they we live. If you have a clean and organized house or apartment that says a lot about you to other people. If your home is inviting and colorful and cheery that shows that you are ready for visitors at any time and they are welcome they are welcome to come in. If your house or apartment is dark and messy that shows you would rather be alone and have no one come over. Do you have a fence or a line of trees separating you from your neighbors that also says a lot about you? It says you are a not a very social person and would rather be left alone then talk to people. In some cultures touching and hugging is a big part of their lives. How you touch someone says a lot about you. The way you touch someone says a lot if you touch them loving and comforting it shows you are kind. If you touch them too hard and hurt them, people are going to be afraid to touch you when they see you. In the United States we always shake hands with people when see them or meet someone a new person. That says you are friendly but not always in a good way. We shake hands with a lot of people and sometimes we don’t really want to see that person any more. The way we handle employees at work is another example. If you have to reprimand and an employee the way you go about it says a lot about you. If you are loud and yell at the employee it says you don’t respect the person as an employee or a person in general. You are telling that employee that they are basically useless and you don’t want them around. If you reprimand the employee but do it in a positive way that says you respect the employee and you are just trying to help them learn from their mistakes. That shows them that they are part of the team and you are willing to work them until they understand what you expect of them. We show nonverbal and unwritten communication in our lives each and every day. How we choose to do it is up to us. Only we can give an impression on people it’s up to us if we want to leave a good impression or a bad impression. We communicate with every one we see though out the day and it’s not always good communication. So we need to remember that every time we come in contact with someone. Jurassic Park Persuasive Essay I. A Brief Summary of the Plot. A billionaire has created a technique to clonedinosaurs. From the left behind DNA that his crack team of scientists andexperts extract he is able to grow the dinosaurs in labs and lock them up on anisland behind electrified fences. He has created a sort of theme park on theisland which is located off the west coast of Costa Rica. The island is calledIsla Nublar. He plans to have the entire planet come and visit his wondrousmarvels. He asks a group of scientists from several different fields to come andview the park, but something terribly goes wrong when a worker on the islandturns traitor and shuts down the power. II. A Description of the Most ImportantAspects of the Contents. The main characters in the book are: John Hammond whois a billionaire developer who has used his resources to create the dinosaurfilled island known as Jurassic Park. He is an old grandfather, and he dies inthe book by a dinosaur known as a Procompsognathus. Dr. Alan Grant who i s arenowned paleontologist who agrees to visit Jurassic Park only to find out it isthe home of several Dinosaurs. Unlike the movie Dr. Grant loves kids in thebook. He also had a of a beard. Dr. Ellie Sattler is a Paleobotinist and AlanGrant who is among the first people to tour Jurassic Park. Tim who is the 11year old grandson of John Hammond. He is kind of geeky, into computers and lovesDinosaurs. (Reminds me of myself.) His 7 older sister is Alexis. She has a kindof tomboy attitude and loves base-ball Ian Malcom is the Mathematician that usesChaos Theory to predict disastrous results. he only wears black andgray. He is presumably dead in Jurassic Park the book, butmiraculously is in the sequel, The Lost World. Finally there isDennis Nedry. He was the computer genius whos greed and ambition bring chaos toJurassic Park. There are many other characters that played a big part in thebook, but I thought they were the best and the plot revolved around them. Thecharacters show the greates t difference in the movie and the book. There weremany opposites in the characters and even the roles and elements of Tim and Lexwere reversed. The book starts off when some of the dinosaurs have escaped formthe island. John Hammond invites a group of scientists to the park. He alsoinvites his grandchildren. Denis Nedry took a bribe from a rival company to getsamples of Dinosaur DNA. In order to make his escape, he turns the power off,even the electric fences. All hell breaks loose when the humans try to warn aboat that its transporting Dinosaurs to the mainland, and run away from them atthe same time. III. The Significance of the Book to the Student. This book hadplenty of significance in it, even though a lot of the elements that weresignificant were hidden. First of all this book thought us a few basic thingsabout DNA. How its the building blocks of life, and stuff can be cloned. Likethat sheep, Dolly. Also it taught us what some scientific practices were aboutwhen different scie ntists visited the island. Suchexamples are paleontologists,paleobotanists, and mathematicians. 1 other thing that this book teaches thestudent is that it is a prime example of the differences between the movie andthe book. And yes, the book was better. IV. Evaluation of the Book. Personally,I thought this was a great book. When I saw the movie, it was a blast. I lovedthe movie, but when I read the book for the first time I was blown away.
